Mare Magnum Nostrum | National Museum of Ravenna

Winner of the 8th edition of the ITALIAN COUNCIL, program for the promotion of Italian contemporary art in the world, of the General Direction of Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture, Mare Magnum Nostrum by the artist Gea Casolaro has entered the collection of the National Museum of Ravenna. On this occasion, the work is displayed in the museum spaces. It is on display from 24 September to 31 December 2021.

Over a year, the project involved the artist, the curator Leonardo Regano, qwatz  and the working group in the creation and promotion of a digital archive (www.maremagnumnostrum.art) built collectively, to collect photographs of holidays, landscapes, portraits socio-politicians, migrations and so on, thanks to public participation. The work is an environmental and immersive installation that reproduces the coasts of the Mediterranean at 360. A selection of photographs taken from the digital archive are available to the public to be placed on the stretch of coast from which they were taken. In line with the artist’s research, the work stimulates the creation of a complex imaginary of the Mediterranean, which includes different socio-political, economic and cultural perspectives.
